I use oak dowels apposed to pine.
Hinge dowel hole cracks door.
Spread carpenter s glue onto a 3 8 inch diameter x 1 inch long wood dowel and tap it into the hole until it s flush with the jamb.
If the screw holes seem stripped out or the screws don t fit tight enough when you screw the hinges back onto the door inject some glue into the holes.
Bore out and plug each of the remaining stripped screw holes the same way.
Berta 1 2 overlay 105 degree 6 way 3 cam adjustment w dowel face frame cabinet door hinges with installation screws 40 pieces 4 5 out of 5 stars 59 49 99 49.
Then reposition the hinge leaf and bore 1 8 inch diameter pilot holes.
Finish by securing the hinge by driving screws into the dowel reinforced holes.
Fix it the right way not the wrong way.
After drilling a hole to accommodate the dowel and applying glue to both the hole and the dowel use another dowel of a larger diameter to set the smaller dowel into the hole.
The wrong way is a temporary fix not cool.
Pound some small dowels into the holes.
If the wood there is not sound then you are likely looking forward to some more serious repair such as replacement of the jamb side board or the whole jamb.
Since you say that the wood under the hinge and around the hinge screw holes has split and gone soft it pays to check the wood of the door jamb adjacent to the hinge mount location as well.
Replace hinges that are totally.
If the attachment plate needs to be closer or farther from the edge of the door plug the existing screw holes with short pieces of wooden toothpicks and wood glue then redrill in the right.
Repair broken door hinges that hang loosely off the door by replacing the hinge pin or filling the stripped screw holes and reattaching the hinges to the door.
